Trekking in Ecuador

Ecuador is renowned for its celebrated “Avenue of Volcanoes”, which runs the length of the country. While the volcanoes are visible from the roads, many trekking enthusiasts love to push towards the summits that rise to more than 6,000 metres!

If summiting a volcano is not on your itinerary, you can still enjoy magnificent hikes accessible to all, including families. Try the circuit around Lake Cuicocha near Otavalo, the Quilotoa Loop, or the Inca Trail. Other superb walks include those in Sangay National Park and Machalilla National Park.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Ecuador?

To maximise your chances of fine weather during your Ecuador trip, the ideal timing depends on which regions you plan to visit.

The Andes

The weather is drier in December–January and July–August, giving you a better chance of spotting the volcanic peaks, which are often hidden behind clouds. Temperatures stay cool (around 10–15°C) and can drop sharply at night.

The Amazon

The dry season runs from December to March. Avoid February–March when river levels can be too low for comfortable navigation. October–November is ideal: it is the best time to spot wildlife.

The Pacific Coast

The climate remains pleasant from September to November, and it is also quieter than July–August, which is the Ecuadorian school holiday season.

The Galápagos Islands

From January to May, the weather is slightly warmer and more humid, with calmer seas: perfect for snorkelling and underwater exploration. From June to December, conditions are generally drier and cooler (around 20°C), and this is also the better season for observing mammals and birds.
