Located at the heart of the Caribbean, the Dominican Republic offers far more than paradise beaches lapped by turquoise water. This small Caribbean country on the island of Hispaniola has an entirely different face, far removed from the well-trodden tourist trail. A face made of mountain villages, seaside fishermen, tropical forests, living rural traditions, shared smiles and genuine human adventures. This multifaceted destination will win you over with the extraordinary diversity of its landscapes, the richness of its cultural heritage and the warmth of its people.
With Tierra Latina, experience a journey that means something. We have made a deliberate choice not to include Punta Cana in our travel offerings because we believe in slow, respectful, human-scale tourism. We believe in encounters, in discovering local life, and in experiences well off the beaten track. Welcome to the Dominican Republic, with authentic itineraries at the heart of a country still largely undiscovered!
Here are some of the places and experiences we incorporate into your Dominican Republic holidays:
The Dominican capital is an underrated gem. The Colonial Zone, listed by UNESCO, plunges you into the history of the first European colonies in the Americas. Wander cobbled alleyways, flower-filled patios and street music. Santo Domingo is said to be the first capital of colonial America!
Our highlights: a guided tour with a local historian; a sunset stroll along the Malecón; dinner at a popular local eatery; an evening of rum and cigars with Dominicans; or catching a baseball match, the national sport!
Head for Samaná, a paradise for nature lovers. Enjoy wild white-sand beaches, snorkel in crystal-clear waters, wander among the multicoloured villages of Las Terrenas, and venture all the way to the spectacular El Limón waterfall for an excursion that combines hiking and swimming.
Our highlight: between January and March, the Samaná Peninsula is one of the world’s finest spots for watching humpback whales!
Did you know you can hike above 2,500 metres in the Dominican Republic? The Jarabacoa and Constanza region is a paradise for nature and adventure lovers: waterfalls, pine forests and crystal-clear rivers await: a world away from the postcard image of the country!
Our highlights: an overnight homestay in a rural community; a visit to a fair-trade coffee plantation; a river swim after a beautiful walk.
The province of Barahona, in the south-west of the country, is one of the least visited but most authentic regions of the Dominican Republic. Framed by the Sierra de Bahoruco and bordering the Caribbean Sea, this region offers strikingly beautiful contrasting landscapes.
Jaragua National Park and the beach of Bahía de las Águilas are among the natural treasures of this area. This 8 km beach (considered one of the most beautiful in the Caribbean) has remained wild and untouched by mass tourism. Its limited access guarantees the preservation of its fragile ecosystem.
Our trips in this region favour ecological accommodation such as eco-lodges managed by local communities: human-scale structures that integrate perfectly into their surroundings and support the local economy.
Our highlights: camping under the stars in the Bahía de las Águilas desert; swimming in the Oviedo lagoon; visiting a border market with Haiti.
