What Is the Best Time to Visit Chile?

Chile – a vibrant blend of South American contrasts – offers a feast of discoveries for every season. The perfect timing depends on your aspirations.

In spring, head to the Atacama Desert, when the brilliance of its colours contrasts with the arid landscape. Starry nights transform the Atacama into a captivating natural observatory.

Valparaíso, jewel of the Pacific, and Santiago, dynamic metropolis, shine at their best in spring. Departing between September and November allows for optimal exploration, from animated streets to the Andean peaks as a backdrop.

Patagonia, wild and spellbinding, reveals its treasures between November and March. Torres del Paine National Park offers an immersive experience, whether by self-drive or tailor-made circuit. This is also the best season for trekking in Chile, with Patagonia offering sublime hiking trails.

Easter Island, a pearl isolated in the Pacific, invites discovery all year round. A mystical escape that transcends time!

Is Chile Expensive?

Setting off to discover Chile – from the mysterious Easter Island to the majestic Patagonia – can raise questions about the cost of the adventure. Chile is indeed one of the most expensive countries in Latin America. However, prices remain below European levels. In practice, the budget depends above all on the style of travel you are looking for and the regions you visit.

Southern Chile, with Patagonia and the magnificent Torres del Paine National Park, is noticeably more expensive than the north of the country. The Atacama, for instance, offers more affordable accommodation options.

For a tailor-made circuit that includes full logistics, nights in charming 3/4-star hotels, domestic flights, private transfers and authentic activities, budget an average of €200 per day. A cost that may seem significant but which allows you to travel in complete peace of mind, without worrying about a single detail. To reduce the cost of a tailor-made Chile trip, consider a self-drive road trip which also allows you to explore the country’s magnificent landscapes at your own pace.

For reference, Chile’s national currency is the Chilean peso, a fairly stable currency against the euro and the dollar. In 2023, one euro was worth an average of 950 Chilean pesos.

What Documents Do You Need for Chile?

For stays of less than 90 days, EU nationals do not need to apply for a visa. Presentation of a valid passport is mandatory, with at least six months’ validity from the date of entry into the country.

On arrival in Chile, the local authorities will issue you with a Tarjeta Única Migratoria (unique migration card). Important: this card will be required on departure. Keep it carefully throughout your stay in Chile.

In terms of vaccinations, no vaccine is mandatory to enter Chile. However, as with any trip, we recommend that your DTP (diphtheria, tetanus, polio) and hepatitis A and B vaccinations are up to date. Regarding Covid-19, all health entry requirements were lifted on 9 May 2023: no vaccination certificate, antigen test or PCR test is required.

What Is the Coldest Month in Chile?

With its 4,000 km stretching from north to south, between the Andes to the east and the Pacific to the west, Chile offers a remarkable climatic diversity. If you are sensitive to the cold, a few seasonal tips are worth bearing in mind for your Chile trip.

Patagonia, in the south, experiences its coldest nights between June and August. That said, a winter stay in Patagonia has its own charm! In northern Chile, the arid Atacama Desert can surprise: nights in this astronomical haven can be cooler than expected, particularly between May and July.

Santiago, the cosmopolitan capital, remains relatively temperate even in winter, though cooler nights can be felt from May to September. The charming Valparaíso, on the Pacific coast, enjoys a mild climate even in winter.

Whether your Chile circuit is tailor-made or a self-drive road trip, packing thermal layers is advisable. Planning a Chile trip requires navigating the seasons, as each region – from Patagonia to Santiago – has its own weather rules.
